Joseph Barry Distillery: taste world-class Cape brandy in Barrydale

Joseph Barry Distillery: taste world-class Cape brandy in Barrydale
As you arrive in Barrydale from the Montagu side of Route 62, one building stands tall and proud against the Karoo backdrop: the Joseph Barry Distillery. It's a landmark, a welcome sign, and  for anyone who appreciates a good brandy, one of the most rewarding stops on any Karoo Escapes journey along the R62.

A heritage poured since 1941

The distillery is named after Joseph Barry, the 19th-century merchant whose entrepreneurial spirit gave the town its name. Barry built a trading empire along the Breede River and was a passionate supporter of the region's early brandy industry, forever encouraging local farmers to lift the quality of their wine and distillate. His own copper stills were said to produce some of the finest brandy in the Cape — a benchmark the distillery still chases today.

Handcrafted Cape Brandy has been made here since 1941, and the method honours tradition at every step: the wine is double-distilled in copper pot stills in the classic Cognac style, then matured for years in French oak barrels. A magnificent antique copper potstill remains in use to this day, quietly turning out the legendary Joseph Barry range.

The tasting experience

This is where the visit really comes alive. The distillery's tasting room welcomes travellers along the R62 with something a little special: an artisan chocolate-paired tasting of the Joseph Barry brandies, where each expression is matched to chocolate that draws out its character. It's a relaxed, memorable way to discover the fruit-forward style that defines Cape Brandy from the Klein Karoo,  from the smooth, easy-drinking styles to the deeper, barrel-aged gems. The beautifully revamped tasting room even includes a craft brewery, so there's something for everyone in the party.

Brandy worth bragging about

Make no mistake,  these are serious, award-winning spirits. The Joseph Barry Cape Pot Still Brandy "Ten" was crowned Best Brandy in the World at London's prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition, beating brandies from France, Australia and the USA. The range has continued to collect top honours since,  a remarkable feat for a small distillery team in a town of only a few thousand people.

Plan your visit

The Joseph Barry Distillery sits right at the entrance to Barrydale on Route 62, making it an easy and natural first (or last) stop on your trip. The tasting room is open through the week,  it's worth checking current tasting times and booking ahead for the chocolate pairing, especially over busy weekends and holidays.

Whether you're a dedicated brandy lover or simply curious, a tasting here is an essential Karoo Escapes experience. Settle in, sip slowly, and toast the maverick spirit of Joseph Barry,  the man who put this little Klein Karoo town, and its world-class brandy, firmly on the map.
