The story behind SorgvrySorgvry House of Guests is the life project of host Uwe, who first visited South Africa on holiday, discovered Barrydale and — in his own words — it was love at first sight. He relocated from Hamburg, Germany to Barrydale in 2014 and recognised in a beautiful 1920s building on Steyn Street exactly what he had been looking for.
The building was lovingly and extensively renovated, with great care taken to retain the original character and architectural integrity of the home throughout and the result is a guesthouse that feels simultaneously historic and impeccably considered.Uwe is not a passive host. He is deeply embedded in the Barrydale community, generously supporting local charities including a much-needed day care centre in the town — a reflection of the values that define everything about Sorgvry.
